Gefilte fish is a traditional Jewish food that is commonly served during Passover. This dish is made from a mixture of ground fish, onions, eggs, and various seasonings, and is typically served cold. Despite its simple ingredients, gefilte fish has a rich history and is deeply ingrained in Jewish culture. In fact, it is believed that the dish dates back to the Middle Ages, when fish was an affordable and plentiful source of protein for Jewish families. Today, gefilte fish continues to be a popular dish during Passover, and is often enjoyed alongside other traditional foods like matzo ball soup and brisket.

Recipe for Gefilte Fish:

Ingredients:

2 lbs. of ground fish (such as carp, whitefish, or pike)
2 onions, chopped
3 eggs, beaten
2 tbsp. matzo meal
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 cup of water
Instructions:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground fish, chopped onions, beaten eggs, matzo meal, salt, sugar, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

Using wet hands, shape the fish mixture into small oval-shaped balls, about 2 inches in diameter.

Place the fish balls in the prepared baking dish, making sure to leave a bit of space between each one.

Pour the cup of water over the fish balls, making sure that they are evenly coated.

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the fish is fully cooked and the balls are slightly browned.

Once cooked, remove the baking dish from the oven and let the gefilte fish cool to room temperature.

Serve the gefilte fish cold, garnished with fresh parsley or horseradish, if desired. Enjoy!
